Earl has never been able to sleep on an airplane. So while sitting there he began thinking and sorting through everything that happened during his trip. His thoughts, unexpectedly, drifted to a novel resting upon his lap. He recalled thinking every book he had ever read consisted of a beginning, middle, and end.
But not so with the Gospels! It takes four individual books to tell the whole story and then they still do not conform to a beginning, middle, and end, at least not in a conventional manner.
Then the question came, “Why can’t the full Gospel story be presented in a more conventional literary fashion?” He already had the beginning in the birth stories of Matthew and Luke. Like wise the end of the story, Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension, were in place as told by all four Gospel writers. All that was missing was a coherent version of the middle section.
As he looked at this major component of the Gospel story, it appeared to be literary chaos. This was not used as a derogatory term. It was a way to identify this body of information in which he could not find rhyme or reason, on the basis of a timeline.
On his next couple of trips to Israel, Earl determined to listen more carefully to what the people who lived there had to say. That included Palestinians and Jews. It began to dawn on him, that what he was struggling with was the Eastern mindset as differing from his Western mindset. He grew up with the Western mindset, he was educated in it, and it is his natural way of thinking.
The basic premise of Jesus and the Gospel Timeline is every event occurs on a timeline within a given context and has a beginning, middle, and end.
The goal of Jesus and the Gospel Timeline is to establish as accurately as possible the timeline of Jesus from birth to ascension. No single gospel provides this information per se.

Jesus and the Gospel Timeline is a fantastic resource for anyone who has ever read the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and were left feeling a bit confused and disoriented from the different events and parables told from a "timeline" perspective. Earl has taken on the painstaking task of "lining up the history" of the four gospels as it happened, chronologically. This makes it so easy and enjoyable for the reader to learn and gain insight from the varying authors as presented, side by side.Earl David has also included pages of background information, geographical explanations with very informative (and essential) sidebar notes. This gives the reader a much clearer picture of the scriptures that makes sense in their context!
My favorite aspect of reading this book is that, I am learning things about the gospels that I didn't even think to question or know there was a background story that even existed - and I've read the gospels many times over!! This by far, is my favorite bible study I've ever done before. It's all meat and potatoes here!!

Our Sunday school class has been using this as a study guide and it is well written, and so helpful to have events covered in chronological order (as best known). All gospel scripture is included so that different accounts of the same event are together. Meaningful and educational!
Jesus and the Gospel Timeline is a very unique book. I have never seen anything like it. It is not only valuable for an individual's personal study of the Gospels but would also be a great resource for people who teach Sunday School. I really enjoyed this book and feel it has improved my understanding of the Gospels and how they fit together to tell us about the life of Jesus. Rev. David's comments will give you the background to help you understand the scriptures better. I would definitely recommend this book.
I don't usually review books I have not completed reading but I have to tell you this book is special, as is Rev. Earl David. I am priviledged to be in a class Rev. Earl is teaching covering "Jesus and the Gospel Timeline." In this class I have come to know Earl, a man who treasures his words and humbly presents the gospel with integrity and grace. He has been to the Holy Land many times, and brings an understanding of his expereinces there that enhance this book and our class time. Studying the gospels along his constructed timeline offers new insights, new understandings and brings a fresh prespective to the life of Jesus. You'll want a copy of this book not only to study but to reference for years to come.
